Feast of St. Irenaeus

God for everyone

From today’s Scripture: A scribe approached and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”—Mt 8:19

Today the Church celebrates the life and martyrdom of St. Irenaeus. He was a bishop who gave his all, to the point of death, who spoke strongly in one of the biggest struggles of the early Church. That struggle was against gnosticism, which taught among other things, that knowledge of God was something reserved for some and not for others.

He taught about many things. Who is God? Who are we? Maybe those two questions sum up much of what he helped the Church to clarify. God is present and available to each of us, especially in the Eucharist. It bears repeating, in deeds as well as words: We all are children of God; not just some of us.

Let us pray: O God, you give me life itself. Help me to honor your gift by seeing your hand in the lives of everyone I meet today.
