Dying to self

From today’s Scripture: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.”—Jn 12:24 [?]
How many deaths the faithful Christian experiences! Some offer their lives completely as martyrs, but the rest of are called to die to self constantly. Ask any parent who crawls out of bed and stumbles to a crib to love a crying baby! Ask the person who gives up a relaxing night to visit a friend in the hospital. Ask the spouse who turns down a great opportunity because it’s not right for the family. From each death comes life, Christians know. It’s never easy, but always rewarding.
Let us pray: Jesus, help me today to take your words to heart. Who can I help today? What convenience can I forgo for the greater good? Help me to discern, and to act!
