Feast of St. Thomas

Daily Reflection

Feast of St. Thomas

Peace be with you.

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, ‘Peace be with you.’” —Jn 20:26

How often we need simply to get to the point. We have explanations for this, excuses for that, all manner of complexity. Jesus tells us, as he told the apostles again and again, “Peace be with you.”

It’s a peace that is a foundation for our understanding of everything else. We saw the Lord, we didn’t see the Lord, we believe, we don’t believe, one’s holy enough to be with us; another isn’t—Jesus cuts through the confusion with a simple message: “Peace be with you.” His other way of saying this, again and again, is, “Be not afraid.” That’s the starting point for love and understanding. We worry too much, don’t you think?

Let us pray: Calm my fears, O Lord. Today let me reach for, and find, the peace that is the bedrock of faith.
