Feast of the Holy Innocents

Our hope in darkness

From today’s Scripture: “But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin.” —1 Jn 1:7

Jesus escaped the violence of his homeland as an immigrant to Egypt with his family.  The attempt to kill him was so vicious that they killed all the boys under the age of two: the martyrs we honor today.

We continue to weep for the loss of children because of violence. That violence may be war, gun fire, domestic violence, or abortion. Our hope for the cessation of this violence is in the blood of Jesus, who redeems the world. He invites us out of the darkness of a deadly culture into a culture of light and life.

Let us pray: O Lord of the innocents, heal our grief over so many innocent lives lost by the violence of our world. Help us be an instrument of peace and a voice for conversation and redemption in the power of Christ.
