18th Monday in Ordinary Time

Food for thousands

From today’s Scripture: “But they said to him, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.”—Mt 14:17

Many parts of my neighborhood were flooded not long ago. Like many of my neighbors, I immediately went through closets to find what others needed. As we distributed what little we had, we gave hugs and support to people who had never been flooded. Just like the disciples, the task seemed monumental. Yet trees were moved, houses cleaned, neighbors fed, and new friendships cemented. I believe that the same Jesus who provided food to thousands, provided for us what was needed. Who needs my “little bit” of time and presence today in their time of need?

The disciples in today’s Gospel knew it, too. They, and we, spend the rest of our lives listening to God’s call more deeply.

Let us pray: Jesus, deepen my confidence that when I generously share the little bit I have, you are always able to use it to provide abundantly what is needed.
