Fifth Saturday in Ordinary Time

Miracles of generosity

From today’s Scripture: “Still he asked them, ‘How many loaves do you have?’”—Mk 8:5

Can you imagine the dread of the disciples when Jesus shared his concerns about the people being hungry and needing to eat? I can see them looking down at their feet trying not to make eye contact, each hoping they would not be the one chosen for the task. Their response to his concern is the question, Where in the world would they get that much food? His response is to ask, What do you have?

There are so many needs in our world today. Hunger, poverty, homelessness, child abuse, drug abuse, human trafficking…each day we hear more and more cries for help. It is overwhelming to even think of where to begin to relieve these burdens. Jesus wants us to respond to the needs of others. Our love of Christ impels us to respond to the needs of others. Like the disciples he asks us to respond with what we have. He makes our offering into what he needs. What we have is our time, treasure, and talent.
