Fifth Thursday in Ordinary Time

Mother’s love

From today’s Scripture: “She replied and said to him, ‘Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.’ Then he said to her, ‘For saying this, you may go. The demon has gone out of our daughter.’”—Mk 7:28-29

When I read this Scripture, my mind is flooded with many images from St. Jude Hospital, of mothers crying and begging for something to be done for their sick children. In the tears, you see their strength, determination, and persistence.

This mother, too, was desperate for her child to be healed. She sought Jesus out, fell at his feet and begged for her daughter, revealing her faith in his healing power. Her persistence revealed the strength of her faith.

How strong is my faith? When I pray for someone’s need or my own need, do I stay engaged with Jesus or do I just say a quick prayer and go on to the next thing? Am I persistent in seeking him?

Let us pray: Lord, help me to be strong in my faith and in my prayer. When interceding for others give me the grace of persistence. When I struggle  today, let me hear your gentle voice telling me you are near.
