Fifth Wednesday in Ordinary Time

What’s in your heart?

From today’s Scripture: “But what comes out of a person, that is what defiles. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder…”—Mk 7:20-21

I love to cook. I love to see people enjoying a meal that I have prepared. I can go from complete joy to loathing the minute I hear someone at the table say, “does this have onions in it, I can’t eat onion although I loved the onion rings I ate yesterday; What kind of oil did you use; How many carbs are in this; I will eat broccoli but I do not like it; This is not on the diet I started before I sat down….” The focus becomes on the food selection. The love and gift of the meal is lost.

The food might be in our stomach, but the love and gift is in the hearts of those who prepare and those who eat. What fills our heart is what truly matters. Our hearts, if we give them to Christ, will be filled with love, kindness and mercy. If we choose to keep our heart to ourselves, we develop hardened hearts that nurture evil thoughts. Who have you entrusted your heart to?

Let us pray: Lord, I give you my heart, fill it with your love.
