The fruitfulness of faith

From today’s Scripture: “Whoever remains in me…will bear much fruit…”—Jn 15:5
The world can be a rough place. I see this often in my ministry in prison systems. Many of the inmates have been given a tough, even brutal, lot in life. They have been rejected, betrayed, crushed, and, in many ways, cast out from society into a rubbish pile.
And, yet, when they come to know Christ and remain in the grace of the Church, something changes. They begin to raise their heads. They look others in the eye. They discover their worth and talents. They begin to give of themselves. They smile. They do what seemed impossible: They love even though they were never really taught how to love. Ultimately, they remain in Christ, and bear much fruit.
It is a miracle.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help us to remain in your Son so that we might truly live, and bear much fruit in this world. Please, especially, help those who have been hurt to remain in you. Amen.
