First Friday in Ordinary Time

Bring them to Jesus

From today’s Scripture: “They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him.”—Mk 2:3-4

“We should do what?!” That’s what I can imagine one of the men saying when the decision was made to carry their friend up to the roof. Earlier this week, we read in the gospel about the apostles bringing the sick to Jesus. Today we read about the four men carrying their paralytic friend to Jesus. I wonder if the decision to rip the roof off was unanimous or if some of the four were hesitant. Luckily for the paralytic, the group was determined enough to get to Jesus that they were not deterred by the size of the crowd. They were taking their friend to Jesus by any means possible to the point of ripping the roof off the building. Hopefully, we will have similar determination in bringing our friends to Jesus. We don’t have to tear open the roof to do that; we can accomplish it with a smile, a listening ear, a helpful hand, or just a silent prayer.

Let us pray: Faith opens the way to a relationship with Jesus. The faith of these men helped the paralytic. Lord, give me the grace to help people I may or may not know find their way to you.
