Remove the distractions

From today’s Scripture: “Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’” —Mt 25:44
Several years ago, I was on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We stopped for lunch, and after eating I went back to the bus to enjoy some quiet time. As I gazed out the window, I saw a flock of sheep following their shepherd along one of the streets in the town. There was a goat following behind the sheep. The goat would stop to look over a fence, then it would wander across the street to look at something, then it would run to catch up to the sheep. Unlike the goat, the sheep kept in step with the shepherd. They stopped when he stopped. They never lost sight of him.
If we want to see Christ in the hungry, the thirsty, the prisoner, the stranger, and the ill, we must keep our focus on him. We must never lose sight of him. We must know his ways and his voice. We must stay close to him in prayer, the Sacraments, and in service to others.
Let us pray: Lord, I have allowed so many distractions into my life. I am like that little goat which bounces from one thing to the next, searching for anything and everything that might bring happiness or comfort. You are the one I am seeking. Give me the discipline to remove the distractions and keep my focus on you alone.
