First Sunday of Advent

Preparing our hearts

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.’” —Mk 13:33

Today begins the season of Advent, a time of waiting and preparing our hearts to receive the birth of our Savior. I remember a few years ago when my first nephew was born. There was so much excitement when I received the text that my sister was going to the hospital, and then there were hours of anticipation, waiting to hear that he was finally born! What a joy it is to have a new life in the world!

Do we have that same excitement and anticipation waiting for the birth of our Savior this Christmas? The good news is that unlike the birth of a child, we know exactly when Christmas will happen and how long we have to prepare for it. Spending time in silent prayer or lighting an Advent wreath before supper each night are just a few suggestions to get the preparations going. Let’s start today.

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for the gift of your son, Jesus. Help me to slow down today and prepare my heart during this Advent season.
