First Sunday of Lent

First Sunday of Lent

Bathed in light

From today’s Scripture: “When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.”—Lk 4:13

At night, I can look out our chapel windows and see a lot of lights in the distance. Yet, in the morning, I can see one bright light shining in the distance. And it is very bright.

Today is our first Sunday in Lent. It’s a time we can look at the past, the present and where we want to be in our relationship with the Lord and others. Whatever Lenten practice(s) we do, they are meant to bring us closer to Jesus and to others on the journey.

Lent is a time to sit with him, to listen to him and then be sent by him. In today’s Gospel, the last words are, “[the devil] departed from him for a time.” It is a time for us to recognize those temptations, distractions, those things that pull us away from the Lord. It is a time to find the bright shining light once again, a time to discover or rediscover the Lord’s presence and be filled with his love, forgiveness, hope, mercy and to give the same to others on our journey.

Let us pray: Lord, as we enter this season of Lent, help us once again to take the time to be with you. Help me to see those areas in my life that need change, and give me your grace to make them. Let the brightness of your light bathe me completely with your love so I might live as you would have me to live.
