Into the desert

From today’s Scripture: “At once the Spirit drove him out into the desert and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan.” —Mk 1:12-13
In the movie “Facing the Giants,” Grant Taylor is a Christian high school football coach who struggles with many adversities both on and off the field. He has never had a winning season. He learns that a group of parents is petitioning to have him replaced. He has a car that is very unreliable, expensive home repairs are piling up, and he and his wife are dealing with infertility issues. Grant leans into his trust and faith in God to battle the fear and sense of failure in his life. He inspires his team to use faith to conquer their fears.
During Lent, we accompany Jesus into the desert. This desert time is a period of reflection on our life and relationship with him. It gives us the opportunity to identify the giants we face in our own lives—the giants that weaken our relationship with Christ and one another. These giants can be self-doubt, anger, jealousy, fear, gossip, etc.
We are not alone in this desert. Jesus remains with us. Let us lean into him in faith and trust as we battle the giants we face daily.
Let us pray: Lord, during this Lenten season, give me the courage to walk with you into the desert. Help me remain there with you as together we identify those things that keep me from loving and trusting you completely.
