First Monday of Lent

Daily Reflection

First Monday of Lent

Love your neighbor

From today’s Scripture: “Behold, now is a very acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation.”—2 Cor 6:2 (Gospel acclamation)

About a week before going on vacation or a trip, my older brother begins to slowly lay out clothes and other items he might need and he asks his wife to do the same. The day before the trip, he just puts everything in the suitcase and is ready with no need to rush.

Our readings today lay out for us a way of life that leads us on our journey to being more united with the Lord and our neighbors. Sometimes we might feel that we are not making much progress in our spiritual lives because we continue to commit the same sins or make the same mistakes. Maybe we need to begin laying out one thing we want to work on and put our emphasis on it.

The last line in our first reading today is “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” Gently, we can lay out, each day, a simple act or word of love for what we are going to do that day. When we come before the Lord we won’t have any fear because we have been preparing (laying out) how we live in relation to Jesus and to our neighbor.

Let us pray: Help me to live each day as if it were my last. Help me to live so that when it is time for my passing, there will be no fear. Help me live a life of love for you and my neighbor.
