First Tuesday in Ordinary Time

Having ears to hear

From today’s Scripture: “In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are–the Holy One of God!’” —Mk 1:23-24

Did you ever look at a question or problem and feel that the obvious just can’t be the answer? That seems to be the reaction of the people in the Capernaum synagogue. In yesterday’s gospel, the people heard God the Father’s voice identifying Jesus as his most beloved son, and then in today’s gospel, we hear the unclean spirit identify Jesus as the “Holy One of God.” Two opposite ends of the spectrum on two different occasions have identified Jesus, and yet in today’s gospel the people in the synagogue are still somewhat unconvinced. They respond in amazement, “What is this?” They can’t seem to believe their eyes and ears.

Let us pray: Lord, give us ears to hear and understand your words and strengthen us for our mission here on earth.
