Forgive us our trespasses
From today’s Scripture: “This is how you are to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name….”—Mt 6:9
Jesus came into the world to guide us in all things. In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches us how to pray. The Lord’s Prayer is a classic example of a prayer that is concise, to the point, and beautiful. We proclaim that we honor God. We pray that his will may be done. We continue to ask for God to take care of our needs, to forgive us as we forgive others. We conclude that we pray that we may be safe from all evil, sin and temptation.
Do you ever pray the Lord’s prayer slowly? Listen in our hearts to these words we pray, and seek to live. When I ask Jesus to forgive me, am I willing to live the words, “As we forgive those who trespass against us?” These are powerful words that I sometimes race through, and do not stop and apply them to my life. Pray the Lord’s Prayer; don’t just recite it. It offers us a challenge as well as a blessing.
Let us pray: Lord, I come this lenten Tuesday seeking to live the life you call me to live. Open my heart to be able to meditate on the prayer you have given us. Allow your prayer to change me, in your name. Amen.
