Humble encounters

From today’s Scripture:“…and remember always to welcome strangers, by doing this, some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”—1 Heb 13:2
These words of St. Paul echo in my ears. I love meeting strangers. I want to hear their story of life. When I talk to someone at first, I feel more like I am doing an interview. When someone invites me into their world I grow in appreciation of another way of life.
Knowing another story helps me to be more compassionate. I try to walk in their shoes, to feel how it may be to be old, or alone, in prison, those that struggle with finances, a migrant seeking to take care of their family or a young person seeking to find their way in life. In these times of encounter, I feel more of a disciple of Jesus. They allow us to help bring about the Kingdom of God.
What a great opportunity Jesus entrusted us with. Let us entertain angels.
Let us pray: Loving Lord, today let me be open to the stranger in my midst. Let me see how that person might let me be closer to you.
