Daily Reflection

Fourth Friday of Advent

True freedom

Today’s O Antiphon:  O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God!

Glenmary’s founder, Father William Howard Bishop, knew all about rules and their benefit to a community. In fact he wrote, “Rules lead us to a perfect life. Look at them as an expression of your own best judgment for your own best interest. They are lifesaving and give new freedom.”

The highest laws or commandments we follow are from God. And God’s commandments don’t stifle us; on the contrary, they give us a boundary to exist within to reach the full potential and destiny he has created us for. He knows exactly what we need, he cares about our daily worries and anxieties. He is not distant; he’s Emmanuel, the very name of God that means “God is with us.”

Let us pray: Emmanuel, you are God with me. Let me never forget your nearness. May your spirit comfort anyone who feels the depth of loneliness increase as Christmas draws near.
