Our own exile

From today’s Scripture: “Lo, I am about to create a new heaven and a new earth.”—Is 65:17
To the Hebrews in exile, Isaiah’s proclamation of God’s promise to create something new seemed unimaginable. They simply wanted their freedom so they could return to their former way of life, to take up where their pre-exile lives left off.
For over a year, we have tolerated our own exile in the restrictions imposed on our freedom due to the COVID-19. The pandemic upended all of our lives so much so that many of us could not wait for 2020 to end! We longed to turn to some semblance of normalcy that had been denied us. We all longed to get back to the ways things were.
Our readings today invite us to trust that God is healing our world and creating a new earth, a way through the disruptions of the past to a new way of being.
Let us pray: Creator God, show me how to work with you to create a world where there shall always be rejoicing and happiness. Help me to live in such a way that I create an environment where your kingdom can burst forth and transform this world.
