Fourth Thursday of Advent

Longing for the Messiah

Today’s O Antiphon: O King of all nations and keystone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust!

I love the vibrant contrast of imagery in today’s O Antiphon. Jesus is a regal “king” yet he humbles himself to “save man.” The very same “dust” that forms a man also forms the very “keystone” that holds our Church together. In this juxtaposition we find our longing for a messiah who sees us and loves us for who we are, with all our faults. We are reminded that Christ is the very foundation of what we do and who we are. We are called to be servants, and to be a servant Church.

Let us pray: God, help me to be like you: confident in my identity as a child of the King, but humble and servant-hearted in my words and actions.
