More than one way to fast

From today’s Scripture: “This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke…”—Is 58:6
In today’s first reading, we learn of a different type of fasting. The Lord calls it fasting to release those bound unjustly, to set free the oppressed, to share our bread with the hungry, to shelter the oppressed and the homeless, to clothe the naked when we see them, and to not turn our back on our own.
God isn’t eliminating traditional fasting here, but rather showing us that turning to him involves more than one way. One is to engage in works of mercy. As we fast today, as abstain, as we practice our devotions, let us remember to look outside of ourselves to help others in need.
Let us pray: Father, I ask that my spiritual practices and fasts this Lenten season bear good fruits in me and in those I encounter.
