Mary, Mother of God

Mary, Mother of God

New beginnings

From today’s Scripture: “And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” —Lk 2:19

If the past year was a tough one for you, opening a 2024 calendar couldn’t come soon enough. The past is behind; it’s a fresh start with great possibility, new beginnings. And today the Church remembers Mary, Mother of God—whose life after Gabriel’s visit experienced unimaginable beginnings!

“Mother of God.”  As I say these words during Mass, it’s as though a voice in my head goes “WOW!” I cannot do justice to their import: she’s the mother of…G O D! Due to familiarity, the phrase glibly rolls off our tongue like we’re ordering fries with our burger.  Let us savor the reality of what we are saying—truly something that is “awe-full.”

Let us pray: “Mary did you know…when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God?” [Mary, Did You Know? by Mark Lowry & Buddy Greene]
