Asking questions

From today’s Scripture: After Adam had eaten of the tree, the LORD God called to him and asked him, ‘Where are you?’”—Gn 3:9

In today’s first reading from Genesis, God asks threequestions. As my old high school religion teacher, Fr. Keenan, pointed out, it’s always interesting when God asks a question. Instead of answering the questions, Adam and Eve both make excuses, or blame someone else.

The reading highlights the parental aspect of God, obviously he already knows the answers to the questions, but he wants us to work out the answers. The first question is one that I often think about. When God asks, “Where are you?” is the answer “Here I am, Lord”? Or do I respond like Adam and try to hide from God?

Let us pray: Dear Lord, help me stay close to you so when you ask where I am, I can confidently respond, “Here I am Lord.”
