Our primary focus

From today’s Scripture: Jesus entered the Temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things, saying to them, ‘It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.’”Lk 19:45-46

For Jews, the Temple was the holiest of places, the place where they went to worship God. As Christians, we have a similar reverence for our churches as a place to pray and cultivate our relationship with the Lord. However, just as in Jesus’ time, it’s easy for lesser priorities and activities to begin encroaching on the primary purpose of such a holy place – we begin to be caught up in the busyness of these other things and forget what the House of the Lord is really about.

Today, Jesus doesn’t come in and drive out those secondary priorities. So we need to be mindful that our primary focus and reason for being at church, and for existing at all, is Christ. Let us keep our eyes fixed on the Lord, and may all other secondary things remain just that.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to declutter my mind and heart of all the incidentals that draw my focus away from you.
