Ninth Thursday in Ordinary Time

Love is the commandment

From today’s Scripture: “One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’”—Mk 12:28

Sometimes Jesus’ words require interpretation, and sometimes he is clear as a bell. His teaching on the Greatest Commandment is clear. “The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”

All commandments flow from this. If we put God first, and we love our neighbor as ourselves, we will build God’s kingdom on Earth and be prepared to enter it in heaven at the end of our lives.

Let us pray: God, give me the strength to obey your greatest commandments. Empower me to place you above all else and to love my neighbor as myself.
