Saturday of the Second Week of Lent

The Prodigal Son

From today’s Scripture: “My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.”—Lk 15:31

One of the heaviest burdens to carry is a poverty mindset, believing that we could never live in abundance. It makes us believe that someone else’s gain means our chances to succeed are lessened. It makes us resent those who seem to go through life more easily than we do.

The elder brother in today’s Gospel is a prisoner of this mindset. This is why the son feels jealous that his father had never given him “even a goat” to celebrate, even though the Father tells him “Everything I have is yours.” The son’s mindset prevents him from seeing the truth: that he is not living in lack and he doesn’t have to strive for attention and affirmation; he has already received it from his father.

Today, let’s examine our own thoughts to find any areas where we believe we are living in lack. Come out of agreement with those lies, and step into the increased freedom of knowing God is our sustainer, our source, and our provider.

Let us pray: God, help me identify any area where I wrongly believe I’ve been shortchanged. Help me replace that lie with the truth that you are for me, not against me, and that you delight in providing and caring for me.
