Second Friday of Advent

Beyond expectation

From today’s Scripture: “‘Wisdom is vindicated by her works.’”—Mt 11:19

Jesus laments, in today’s Gospel, that people claimed John was possessed because of his ascetic lifestyle, and then the same people compared Jesus to a glutton and drunkard because he associated with what they considered low-lifes! Because he wasn’t meeting the preconceived expectations of his fellow Jews, he was being dismissed.

Those people had a very narrow picture of what the Messiah should be, and Jesus wasn’t meeting that. They weren’t interested in the works of Jesus. How often have I dismissed others because they weren’t what I expected them to look or act like?

Let us pray: Lord, help me to be open and accepting of those who differ from my expectations.
