Second Friday of Easter

Daily Reflection

Second Friday of Easter

Take and eat.

From today’s Scripture: “Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.” —Jn 6:11

Here we have an allusion to an early Eucharistic feast. Later in the chapter, Jesus will associate his very self with this bread. This may strike our ears as odd, as it did those who first heard it. But taking Gamaliel’s insight from the Epistle, perhaps Jesus is inviting us not to ask “How” but is instead inviting us to experience his power, his Word. Gamaliel reserves judgment on the Apostles. That’s something his disciple Paul failed to do early on. Yet where we find Paul “kicking against the goads,” we hear Jesus saying, “Take and eat.”

Let us pray: Gracious Lord, fill our hearts with a hunger for you this day. May we not walk, but run, to your table and receive your grace.
