Second Monday of Advent

Carrying our friends

From today’s Scripture: “But not finding a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus.”—Lk 5:19

There’s a lot going on in today’s Gospel: Jesus teaching, people looking for healing, and the pharisees plotting. But what really stands out is the determination of the paralyzed man’s friends. There’s a large crowd and they can’t get through. I picture one of the friends saying, “Hold my beer, I got an idea.” That’s normally a phrase preceding a disaster! But not this time.

They carry their friend up to the roof, rip out tiles, tie a rope to the stretcher and lower him. Can you imagine the reaction of those gathered? This leaves me wondering, how far would I go to bring a friend to Jesus?

Let us pray: Lord, help me be the type of friend that does not hesitate to go beyond the expected to bring a friend to Jesus.
