Judge not.

From today’s Scripture: “‘Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.’”—Lk 6:36-37
Sunday after Mass, a man asked if I would give him money for a soda. Before I could stop myself, the thought, he just wants to buy alcohol crossed my mind. Seeing my hesitation, he blurted out, “I am homeless and staying at the shelter. I am hungry and mealtime is at 6.”
Judgment enters so quickly and blinds us to the deeper story. If we take the time to ask and listen to what is going on in a person’s life or what caused this situation, it leaves no room for judgment. Mercy lies within the deeper story.
Let us pray: Lord, it is only through your grace that I can be merciful and not judge. I ask for the grace to seek out the deeper story in all the situations I encounter so only your mercy will flow through me.
