Gaze at the poor

From today’s Scripture: “And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table…”—Lk 16:20-21
I saw a video that showed a family sitting in a nice restaurant. While the parents chatted, their little girl looked around. She saw a man in tattered clothing looking in the window. Other diners turned away from him, but she kept gazing at him. When her food arrived, she took it outside to the man.
Having riches is not wrong or bad. It becomes bad when we allow our riches to blind us to the Lazarus who lies before us. We are to be like this little girl, holding the gaze of the poor and meeting their needs.
Let us pray: Lord, help me to see and help the poor I encounter each day. Grant me the courage to never turn away and the love to hold people in poverty within my gaze.
