Practicing what you preach

From today’s Scripture: “The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” —Mt 23:11-12
Today, we hear Jesus admonish the scribes and Pharisees in the Scripture reading. This time Jesus scolds them for, among other things, not practicing what they preach and for putting heavy burdens on others. Have we ever said to someone, “Do as I say not as I do?” Is there any hypocrisy in my words and actions?
We can recognize a lot of hypocrisy that exists in the world today: leaders who say one thing but do another. Sometimes it seems the politicians are more interested in seeing the other party fail than in working at the service of the people. Polarization fuels us to grow further and further apart.
Jesus tells the crowd and us, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Let us pray: Jesus, I turn to you in order to purify my own conduct instead of pointing the finger at others. Help me to see the hypocrisy in my own life and the times that I have failed to be of service to others, especially those most in need.
