Second Wednesday of Lent

The true absolute

From today’s Scripture: “He said to her, ‘What do you wish?’ She answered him, ‘Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.’”—Mt 20:21

My parents would always tell us that their desire was for each of us to get a good education so that we could have a career that paid well and that we would enjoy. They wanted us to be happy and secure. Most parents want the absolute best for their children.

The mother of the sons of Zebedee desired an honored and distinguished role for her sons. She did not understand that in the Kingdom of God, leaders are to be servant leaders, leaders who are willing to lay down their lives for others.

Let us pray: Lord, I thank you for the love and encouragement of my parents. Help me to trust that what I desire for my loved ones is not always what you know is best for them.
