Servant of all

From today’s Scripture: “They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, Jesus began to ask them, ‘What were you arguing about on the way?’ But they remained silent. For they had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, ‘If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.’”—Mk 9:33-35
Isn’t it surprising how Jesus always seems to turn the tables and give a response or perspective that is totally unexpected? Put yourself in the place of the apostles and keep in mind they still did not understand what the kingship of Jesus would be like. They thought in human terms—perhaps they were each vying for a prominent position once Jesus ascended his throne. It would only be natural for them to do so. Instead of prominence, however, Jesus instructs them to be the “servant of all.”
In our faith lives we are also asked to be servants of all. How might I be a servant today? To save someone an extra step or to wait a few moments extra to hold the door open for another are little ways to serve. Or try greeting a cashier not simply as a worker but, rather, as a person. St. Thérèse of Lisieux summed it up best when she said, “We should seek to do ordinary things with extraordinary love.”
Let us pray: As I begin this day, Lord, give me the grace to be a servant to all who I encounter. Open my eyes, ears, and heart to those around me so that you would guide me in my service to others.
