Seventh Wednesday in Ordinary Time

God willing

From today’s Scripture: “You have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly then disappears. Instead, you should say, ‘If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that.’”–Jas 4:14-15

My great-aunt would sprinkle any conversation with “God willing.” As a child, I had no doubt that she meant it. When I traveled in Mexico, I heard the same desire, “Si Dios quiere.…”

With time, any phrase can become routine and lose its original meaning. This reading from the Letter of James reminds us not to let that happen. He reminds us that our lives are “puffs of smoke.” Tomorrow is not for sure.

Our plans depend on the Lord who gives us life. As a dedicated planner of the future that I think I will have, I find it difficult to keep this in mind. “God willing” may I set aside time today to reflect more fully on the impact of James’ words!

Let us pray: To you O almighty God, I give thanks for the gift of today. Inspire me amid my many plans to be fully aware of your presence. Help me to see this moment as you see it.
