The power of prayer

From today’s Scripture: “She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.” —Lk 2:37
The widow Anna represents so many elderly women in our missions. In Rutledge, when I arrived to start a new church, we struggled to find a building to rent in order to offer Mass. Miss Edith, a widow whose family owned the one of the longest single-owned Ford sales company, was known as the “Catholic” in town. I began telling people Miss Edith was no longer able to drive to Knoxville for church, that she needed a church there in Rutledge. Within one week, the storefront that served as our Catholic Church from 2011 until 2022 became available. She then began rosary and adoration by herself once a week after her hair appointment. That rosary and adoration continues today. The power of widows’ (or widowers’) prayers is amazing.
Let us pray: May we be inspired by Anna and devote ourselves to prayer and fasting for the Kingdom of God.
