Leaven for life

From today’s Scripture: “‘Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread?’”—Mk 8:17
The disciples forget to bring bread. They realize they have only one loaf for the journey. Worrying about the ordinary is okay. Jesus doesn’t have a problem with it. But he seizes the moment and uses the imagery of a leaven to teach them about having the right influence in life. A leaven is meant to transform something for the better.
A dough mixed with leaven rises to become bread. Jesus as our leaven has to influence how we think and see. When the world sees despair, we see hope. When it clamors for vengeance, we offer forgiveness. When it doles out confusion, we create understanding. When it tries to forget, we remember.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, influence my thoughts and actions. Open my heart to see and understand so that I can be your light to others around me.
