Tongue training

From today’s Scripture: “Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: Everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”—Js 1:19
St. Francis de Sales said, “I have made a pact with my tongue, not to speak when my heart is disturbed.” I have this quote pinned up in my office where I can remind myself to be careful with my words each day.
For me, being slow to speak is often difficult! I am a natural communicator, expressing my thoughts and emotions comes easily to me. I often even feel justified in sharing—in my relationships or my work, I feel I have the right and even a responsibility to share my thoughts and opinions.
But from Jesus I have learned that there is something so much more powerful than having the right to do something. More than being justified, I want to be wise. Wisdom tells us when and how to speak and share. Wisdom tells us when an action is more powerful than words, or when the best decision is actually to say and do nothing at all.
Let Us Pray: Lord, train my tongue! Help me to grow in wisdom so that when you tell me to speak, I will speak, and when you tell me to remain quiet and listen, I will be at peace.
