St. Anthony of Padua

Into the world

From today’s Scripture: “Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”—Mt 5:23-24

Any thought that Christianity is an easy religion is dispelled in today’s Gospel. Jesus makes it clear that true religion goes beyond the simple rituals. Fulfilling the letter of the law is not enough. The Pharisees were concerned about the love of God, but not so much about their fellow man.

It’s not enough to come to church each Sunday and observe the rules, you must take your faith out into the world and live the Gospel. Just as Jesus ultimately forgave those who crucified him, he commands us to have a merciful heart, to go beyond the rituals and love our neighbors.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, help me to nurture a merciful heart so that I may fulfill the law, not merely be an observer.
