Purity of heart

From today’s Scripture: “Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.”—Mt 23:28
I could still remember Stephen. He was a homeless man pushing a grocery cart filled with his belongings when I first met him. He was begging for a spare change from joggers and walkers in the park. Since I didn’t have cash with me I suggested that we get burgers at the nearby McDonald’s.
On the way to the restaurant I saw a piano oddly painted in bright colors. I commented about the absurdity of having a piano in the park. He said someone brings it out every morning and puts it away every evening. It’s there for people to share joy with one another.
My new friend got on the chair and started playing the piano like he was performing in Carnegie Hall. That day I learned a valuable lesson on judging someone’s character based on what I see on the outside.
To Jesus what matters the most is what’s on the inside. What’s in your heart?
Let us pray: Lord, today, I pray with the psalmist: “a clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast spirit.”
