St. Bartholomew

Come and see.

From today’s Scripture: “But Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come from Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see’”—Jn 1:45

Father Vic Subb, a Glenmary priest, was invited to give a talk in Chiapas, Mexico. He met a young man named José Carlos, whom he invited him to think about joining Glenmary. Many years later that same man recently became the first Hispanic priest in the history of Glenmary. It all started with a simple invitation to come and see.

Philip invited Nathanael to come and see who this Jesus is. The encounter with Jesus forever changed Nathanael’s life. As we celebrate the Feast of St. Bartholomew, we are called to keep inviting others to come and see. Their first reaction may be scoffing and unbelieving. But that’s alright. Jesus has a way with such folks. Philip invites and then backs off immediately. Jesus does the rest.

Let us pray: Lord, move me to be an instrument of your grace to others. Inspire to invite them to have a life-changing encounter with you.
