St. Bartholomew

Call to discipleship

From today’s Scripture: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”—Jn 1:46

Today is the feast of one of the Twelve, Nathanael, or as he was later called, Bartholomew. When he was invited to come and meet Jesus, Nathanael showed his prejudice. Yet, Jesus praises him as one without guile.

Jesus saw more in Nathanael than Nathanael himself was aware of. Because Jesus saw more, Nathanael was able to overcome his prejudice (“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”) and accept Philip’s invitation to go and see for himself.

His being called to be one of the Twelve had to be a surprise for him. Yet, after witnessing the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus, he was ready to commit to being a disciple and to spreading the Gospel to the whole world.

Let us pray: I ask the Lord for those graces I need to help me overcome my own prejudices against others and God, and to grow in my inner freedom.
