Communion of saints

From today’s Scripture: “He is not God of the dead but of the living.”—Mk 12:27

What did Jesus mean when he said this? Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were long dead, and Jesus cites them to say God is of the living. Here, we learn that death is not the end for the righteous. Our earthly deaths do not separate us from the living. Those who are alive with God in heaven are even more alive than we are.

This, in part, is a basis for the communion of saints. The saints are alive in heaven and united to us through God. What a wonderful thing to remember when thinking of our own loved ones who have passed on. God is the God of the living.

Let us pray: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all saints of God, pray for us that while we live we grow to be ever more like you, steadfast examples of faith.
