St. John Lateran

Jesus, the Temple

From today’s Scripture: Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?—1Cor 3:16

The dedication of the Lateran basilica in Rome reminds us of the millions of Christians who entered the Church led by the Bishop of Rome since the fourth century. Before leaving Mass, they, like us, were motivated by the words, “Go and serve the Lord.” Our own cathedrals indeed point us to something greater.

We see the theme of Jesus as the new Temple in the Gospel of John. The Temple, for Christians the Church, is our place of worship and nurture. We call the Church our mother, even, depending upon her to guide and protect us. We hope that, as we rebuild after the pandemic’s empty churches, that our churches will fill again.

Let us pray: Jesus, help me to fit in the family of Christ where we are all saint and sinner alike. Give me the grace to seek as I make my way to the house of God, our father’s home.
