St. John Neumann

Compelled by love

From today’s Scripture:  The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers—1 Jn 3:16

St. Thomas defines love as the “choice to will the good of the other.” Christ made this choice, and we are called to make it every day. We receive God’s self-giving in the bread. This outpouring is the holy sacrifice which brings us to the cross and to the resurrected Lord. Love is a word used now to mean both “everything” and “nothing at all.” When we look to Christ, however, we find love. We are compelled by love to enter into this self-emptying for others as our way of life. It is who we are in Christ.

Let us pray: Father, open my eyes to see love through Christ. With this image, empower my imagination to live and to act in Christ, in love.
