Have we loved?

From today’s Scripture: “…we should love one another.” 1 Jn 3:11

The law Moses received from God on Mt. Sinai was a “mere” 10 Commandments. In Jesus’ time it had evolved into 613 different proscriptions, the expansion perhaps an attempt to guard against breaking any of the sacred 10. Jesus’ approach was simpler to remember, yet in fact harder to live. We can list the things we didn’t do (kill, steal, commit adultery, lie) but when can we say we’ve actually…loved?

In the writings of John, the Gospel and Letters, loving one another is a recurring theme.  I heard of a priest who repeated the phrase every Sunday. After Mass one day, a parishioner approached his pastor and said, “When are you going to stop talking about love and start talking about God?!”  Of course, God IS love and whenever we love one another, the world is definitely a “Godlier” place.

Let us pray: Lord, I have been loved by you; help me to imitate you by loving like you.
