St. John the Evangelist

The joy of God’s love

From today’s Scripture: “We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.” —1 Jn 1:4

My favorite New Testament letter is the First Letter of John. I call it the love letter to the People of God. It is in this letter that we are called “beloved” and “children of God” and learn,  “God is love.” The type of joy the apostle John wishes to share with us is not some type of euphoria but is a deep sense of security. It is a joy rooted in the reality that despite whatever is happening, Jesus is our brother, Mary is our mother, God is our father, and we are beloved children forever. The unconditional love of God brings us joy.

Let us pray: Thank you, Lord, for adopting me as your child. May I live in the joy of your love this day and every day of my life.
