St. Lucy

Lord, increase my faith

From today’s Scripture: Teach me your ways, O Lord. Your ways, O LORD, make known to me.—Ps 25:4

Somewhere along the way, hundreds of years after her death, the martyr St. Lucy’s story picked up the detail that her eyes were gouged out. She became the patroness of vision. Thus we see representations of her holding her eyes in various ways! But that addition does not diminish her martyrdom. In the fourth century, she died for her faith rather than abandon it.

Can we find an ounce of that fervor, that commitment in our everyday lives? It’s unlikely that we will die for our faith, but are we willing even to be uncomfortable because of it. In these days of Advent, let us ponder ways to deepen our commitment to Christ.

Let us pray: Loving God, you came into our world willing even to die for our sake. Help me to find courage to stand up for what is right in the world around me, even in ways that might make me feel uncomfortable.
