St. Matthias

St. Matthias

Chosen by the Lord

From today’s Scripture: “It is not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain…”—Jn 15:16

Today is the feast of St. Matthias. According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was chosen by the apostles to replace Judas Iscariot following Judas’s betrayal of Jesus and his subsequent death.

Like the first followers of Jesus, each of us, at Baptism, was chosen by the Lord to come and follow him. It may have taken a while for the reality of that call to sink in. Maybe you still are growing in an awareness of that call. That is the amazing thing about our call, that Jesus never grows tired of waiting for us and desiring to walk with us.

Sadly, we can refuse the call or grow lax in living it in the daily routines of our lives. So, along the way of our living, we are fortified in our call when we participate in the sacraments. Like St. Matthias, may we respond more to the call of Jesus and live a more full life of grace.

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for calling me to be a part of you and a part of others on the journey of life. May you bless all of us to live more faithfully as your followers.
